Provisional License

This page provides an overview of provisional licenses and the supervision requirements when issued a provisional license.

When is a Provisional License Issued?

A provisional license is issued within 14 business days of meeting all KBN application requirements. An email will be sent to the email address on file with the KBN along with a message in your Nurse Portal account once the provisional license has been issued.

Am I allowed to work once I am granted a provisional license?

Yes. A provisional license allows the applicant to work as an:

RN Applicant - RNA
LPN Applicant - LPNA
APRN Applicant - APRNA

What are the requirements for working with a provisional license?

Supervision requirements:

Direct supervision - means that the nurse responsible for the applicant shall at all times be physically present in the facility and immediately available to the applicant during working hours while the applicant holds a provisional license. See 201 KAR 20:070 Section 4 (3)

RNA - Direct supervision by a RN or APRN
LPNA - Direct supervision by a LPN, RN or APRN
APRNA - Direct supervision by an APRN

Nursing Practice

Performing direct patient care utilizing critical thinking and knowledge, and skill.

Practice Setting

In any setting where practice requirements listed above can be met. See KRS 314.011 (6), KRS 314.011(7), or KRS 314.011 (10)

Use of the title:

RN Applicant - RNA [KRS 314.041]
LPN Applicant - LPNA [KRS 314.051]
APRN Applicant - APRNA [201 KAR 20:056, Section 5]

Practice under direct supervision until full licensure is issued.

Is my provisional license valid in other states?

A provisional license is valid only in the state of Kentucky

LPN/RN - What happens to my provisional license if I am unsuccessful on the NCLEX?

A provisional license is voided after the applicant has failed the NCLEX examination twice.
Regardless, a provisional license is valid for only 6 months, and then becomes void.
If the provisional license is voided, the provisional licensee must immediately cease practicing in a licensed nursing position.

APRN - What happens to my provisional license if I am unsuccessful on the national certification exam?

A provisional license is voided if notification is received that the applicant has been unsuccessful on the national certification exam.
Regardless, a provisional license is valid for only 6 months, and then becomes void.
If the provisional license is voided, the provisional licensee must immediately cease practicing in a licensed nursing position.
